Why don’t you choose this religion?

March 16, 2008

Kiss Hank’s Ass. This piece was actually something I read during my ‘doubting time’ when I was still a good church-going Christian. Makes you think, doesn’t it? If it doesn’t, then I think it should.

Here’s also the video version.

It is so good to be free. It is so good to live without thinking all the time whether my actions conform to some dogma or not. It’s good to know that there is no hell I need to be saved from. It’s good to choose what I believe and what not.

I think this kind of exercise of free will is good for absolutely everybody. Try it.

I was checking out your post, and I would like to invite you to post your reply to an open question, on my blog:
    http://potomac9499.wordpress.com/2008/01/30/an-open-question-to-all-believers/

I am asking in all sincerity, because I do actually want to understand differing view points, and since you seem to have a different view on religion than many of the people currently in the discussion, I feel your input would be relevant.

    Thank you in advance.

Your post is very interesting, thanks for posting it. I’m not really sure I’d like to read through all these 300+ posts that you have there tho.

Actually, the thing is, that I’ve sort of given up with arguing over these topics. I have been a believer and I know that actually there is no point of arguing with one. There wasn’t a point of arguing with me when I believed, as I was certain of my own truth and no one could convince me by just arguing with me.

What it took for me to de-convert was to read a lot, think a lot and make up my own mind.

If there is a way to make people think about these topics then it would be great. But I think people are afraid of freedom, afraid of unknown and maybe some people do need that directing guidance from… somebody. In this case the religion.

Yeah, the number of comments is a bit overwhelming, which is why I had written up a summary a while back:
    http://potomac9499.wordpress.com/2008/01/30/an-open-question-to-all-believers/#comment-260

Obviously there have still been many more posts since then, the summary gives a fairly good overview of the discussions going on withing the post.

I do agree with you that nothing I can say will changing the mind of a true believer, but it can help push somebody who’s on the fence, and it can help give somebody reasons to doubt, and then perhaps they will look for more information at a later date.

However the original purpose of my post was not to de-convert anybody it was to allow people to see there are many views on the same subject and that perhaps people need to learn to understand each other, even if we don’t always agree.

    Unattainability,

I’m glad you enjoyed visiting my blog. I’d love to hear your thoughts if you’re interested, as I like getting as many different view points as possible.

I am a firm believer that people are best served by knowing as much as they can about the ideas, beliefs, and motivations of others as a way of coming to a mutual understanding (if not agreement).
